There's a raging wild fire in the BWCA, a wilderness area in northeastern Minnesota. We've been camping, canoeing and fishing there for the past 10 years so I've been following the progress of this fire for the past few weeks. So far the Cavity Lake Fire as it is called has consumed 32,000 acres and has cost $6.6 million to fight. It looks like it will continue to burn until a significant amount of rainfall helps put it out. I'm one of those who firmly believe these wild fires are good for the forest, most of the forest in this region is too old and in need of rejuvination. Fire is good!

Fire IS good. It's just upsetting to us I think because the process of succession takes so long. We find dense forests of mature trees aesthetically most pleasing.
How's that for using a crumb of my Forestry 101 lingo?
